CCAP and Mexican Environment/Energy partners reach out to Mexican Industry to determine Effective Climate Change Policy

On Sept. 3 and 4, CCAP held a Mexico Sectoral Study Workshop, co-hosted with the Mexican Environmental Ministry (SEMARNAT) and the Mexican Association for Energy Economy (AMEE) in Mexico City. During the workshop, CCAP aimed to engage the Mexican iron and steel, cement, electricity, and oil refining sectors in a debate that will help government improve climate change policy design.

The European Commission (EC), which funds the current CCAP Sectoral Study, jointly sponsored the workshop. Participants included Mexican governmental officials, representatives from regulatory agencies and industry associations, academic researchers, industry experts, and non-governmental (NGO) representatives.

During the workshop, the hosts reached out to Mexican industry for a substantive discussion on Mexico’s role in the UN international climate negotiations and how it might impact the sectors. CCAP presented potential targets for each of the four industrial sectors to which industry representatives responded and shared their views. Government officials from the environmental ministry, on their part, took the opportunity to talk about the implications of the recently released Special Climate Change Program (PECC). This was the first time the PECC was presented to industry. Ultimately, CCAP’s analysis served as the common language between government and industry who will work together in the design of the four sectoral targets. With a better understanding of the potential mitigation options in Mexico, government and industry will be able to cooperate in the implementation of sectoral approaches as pillars of Mexican climate change policy.

Presentations made in Spanish will be translated to English and posted in the near future.
