CCAP Launches European Dialogue on Energy and Climate Change

On March 29-30, CCAP led the first meeting of the European Dialogue on the Energy & Climate Challenge. The project will develop viable climate solutions that build upon the recent European Commission proposals on energy and post-2012 strategy. In partnership with the Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales (IDDRI), CCAP will bring together senior energy, climate change and finance policymakers from the European Commission, EU member states, industry, non-governmental organizations and academic/think tanks. This first meeting of the Dialogue was hosted by the government of Spain and took place in Madrid. Subsequent meetings will be held over the next two years. Serious discussions are about to begin within the EU Member States on several critical strategies for the EU’s future response to climate change: a new energy and post-2012 climate strategies building upon the recent European Commission’s Communications on an Energy Package and post-2012 climate strategy. With these Communications and the ongoing discussions in the EU regarding their implementation, the time is ripe to develop a coordinated medium- to long-term EU approach to climate change, energy, and finance policy since harmonization of these efforts can move the EU positively forward while uncoordinated efforts will likely make achieving the EU’s climate targets politically, technically, or economically difficult.

The Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP) and the Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales (IDDRI) have launched a European Dialogue on the Energy & Climate Challenge (the European Dialogue) to assist in discussing and developing elements of a coordinated strategy. The Dialogue will bring together key senior players—from the European Commission; environment, energy, transport, finance, and development ministries from EU Member States; leading public and private financial institutions; industry representatives; nongovernmental organizations; and think tanks/academics—to create a shared vision on these interwoven challenges.

CCAP is undertaking a similar Dialogue effort in the U.S. (the Climate Policy Initiative) and analytical work in China, India, Mexico, and Brazil (the Developing Country Project), which will be used to help inform and cross fertilize on the issues and opportunities in these key regions.
